https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/01_00644.html

Rules for status-of-residence procedures are getting stricter. We want to hear from you!
Starting October 1, 2026, the Japanese government sharply increased the fees for renewing or changing a status of residence and for obtaining permanent residence.

On October 1, the guidelines for assessing permanent residence applications were also revised. Requirements involving income, Japanese-language ability, and other factors will become stricter. (Many of the new requirements will apply from April 2027.)
In addition, requirements and screening rules have become stricter for work-related statuses of residence, including "Business Manager" and "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services."
We, Solidarity Network with Migrants Japan (SMJ), are concerned that these changes will place heavy burdens on foreign residents living and working in Japan, and create uncertainty about their lives and futures.
SMJ has issued the following statement on the permanent residence guidelines adopted in October: https://migrants.jp/news/voice/20261002.html
SMJ is now collecting your opinions and messages.
We would like to hear your thoughts on a few questions such as:
You don’t need to have experienced a specific problem yet but we’d appreciate your thoughts and if you’d like to share your thoughts and feelings about your future and your life in Japan.

We may also share some of the messages at public gatherings and other events, but we will not disclose your name or any information that could identify you.
